Auto Trans Question
I have a 94 Ram 1500 with the 360 and an auto trans that I paid $2000 for.
The trans slips when I take off and it seems to be getting worse. Everyone that I have talked to says that the auto trans is junk and overdrive unit always goes out and is costly to replace. My question is first it that true, and if so, what are my options for putting maybe a manual in or another model auto that will hold up better.
I just can't see spending $1600 to rebuild the trans on a $2000 truck with 220,000 miles on it.
(sorry if this has been posted elsewhere)

The tranny's are junk but the motors are solid. I would do vacuum and compression tests on the motor, and, if they check out, take it to a reputable transmission shop. It could also be your Torque converter. One of my vans (5.2l) has ~300k on it and still runs like a top. It had a Jasper tranny installed ~120k. A replacement might be a better option than a rebuild. There are several inherent flaws in the stock trans that have been fixed by aftermarket manufacturers.
I had good luck with the Jasper and, if you don't have anything else to drive, they are probably readily available in your area. If you can wait I would call Wayne at apsprecision.com. Pricewise they are probably about the same, but performance wise aps would be a better unit.
Im not sure if this applies to you. There is a line from the transmisson that goes to the radiator area. This line is one way and if, well when it get clogged will not allow fluid to flow or cool. This is a problem for the transmissions on dodge trucks. It will burn them up in a matter of yards if its bad enough..Everyone I know including myself cut that line out, and put a hose in there instead to allow it to flow..I dont know the techinal limbo for this stuff, but its pretty simple fix..Keep your fluid changed, clean your screens and you should be fine. My last three dodge trucks never had a tranny problem..KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK on wood..each had/has well over 200K and not a problem yet..Now,,Im chasing a ghost right now in my computer area..I think and hope thats it...I dont think Dodge should get such a bum rap for bad trasmissions..I do think that line is a feat of dumb engineering..If you want to know if its messing up, just raise the hood and look down on the passenger side and see if its gummed up with dirt and fluid..If so? that should be it. If you rebuild that tranny still look at that area and see if its messing up..Good luck...........This is all just my opinions, and experiences..Take care
