Default 96 2500 V-10

Looking at a 1996 with a v-10, 79500 miles, what should I look out for, pro's and con's. It has the auto, any truth to them being the weak link? Thanks

They can be a weak link if they haven't been taken care of properly. Mine has 144k on it, with only a leaky converter seal to tarnish it. Honestly, there is no way to know about the transmission. Since you can't look inside it...all you can do is take it for a drive. That is unless you know the previous owner, or unless it comes with highly detailed service records.

The are only a couple v10 issues out there. Some of the early ones had porous head castings, as well as mis-routed plug wires. That's about it.

The truck on the other hand might have a thing or two wrong with it...namely the trackbar. If it hasn't been replaced yet, it will end up needing replacement soon.

79k is fairly low mileage for a 96 [8D]

What is the track bar, and how do you know its bad. I assume something to do with steering. I tested it today, runs good, may sound like a exhaust leak, where the pipe meets the manifold, but may be a manifold leak. It drove/handled good, very tight, good power also. It origanally had 3.55, but owner before this last owner had 4:10's put in. If I buy it, I will use it to pull a open landscape trailer, trailer 2000#'s, 2 1200# mowers and blowers/trimmers, probably up to 6000#'s. How do you guys think it will do for this application.

It's part of the steering, and if it handled/drove good and tight, then you don't need to worry about it.

The exhaust leak could be anything. Could be manifolds...flange...airpump pipe...muffler...you'd have to crawl under the truck and check it out.

As far as what you want to do with it, it should work fine for that. 6000lbs? The truck will barely know it's back there Just make sure NOT to tow with overdrive ON if you go up any hills or steep grades.

And yes, the back tires do tend to wear out fast on them
