Towing a 74 caddy with ram. Dolly or car trailer ?
I have a 74 classic caddy that I need to pull from Ill to Ga in Aug. I have a class 3 hitch and the car is 6000 pounds. I know its a battle tub! Should I use a dolly or a car trailer? Not sure what would be best with that much weight. Anyone have any advice?

Pulled this off my other post in case you missed it....Wow. I don't know if I would put a 6000lb caddy behind a 1500 Ram on a trailer. This car weighed maybe 3500, and the emt trailer weight was 2000. Squatted the truck a little bit - but it drove real nice. If you were to rent a trailer like I had to - you would want to get the wheelbase dimensions of the car and trailer. I don't know if one of those bigass caddies would even fit on this trailer. You could probably tow it with a tow dolly, but you probably should remove the driveshaft from the car so as not to burn the tranny up.
You might check with Hertz Penske for a trailer. Your local Rent-a-Center might have a machinery trailer that would work also. I think if it were mine I would try the dolly and remove the driveshaft from the caddy. Reason being that if the car weighs 6000 lbs, a big enough trailer would probably weigh at least 2500 (the one I had was 2000). That is 8500+ pounds. That would concern me - especially since you are going form Ill to Ga which means lots of hills. Then again - I don't think the dollys have any brakes - I could be wrong. If not - you have a hell of a load on your truck brakes.... I would seriously look into having someone professionaly bring it to you. It cost me $200 in gas just to go from STL to North of Chicago and back also.

Unless you have a camper package, helper spring or add-a-leaf rear spring, a trailer will hurt you. I pulled a tractor while my truck was stock on a hudson trailer. Serious squat. Stoplights were a bitch with the tractor. Later I had the 3" lift with the add-a-leaf and pulled a truck as big as mine on a wood bed rental trailer. It was pushing the fat tires the whole time. Will not go over 55-60 with the weight. Remember our brakes for the trip. They are not well known for their stopping. If you don't have trailer brakes, make sure if you rent one, that it has surge brakes to help stop and take your time. The truck will tow it on a trailer, but take your time.
A tow dolly will keep the weight off and follow easier. Just remember if it is rear wheel drive to pull the drive shaft out if you use a dolly.
