Default Not so happy with JL Audio

I am a little bummed....

November 2004 I decided to upgrade the stereo in my turck.

I purchased a JL Stealthbox for my 1996 Ram... powered it and my door speakers with a JL 300/4 amp.

System worked good for a little over a year.

Now one of the rear channels on the amp is not working.... the sub does not work

The JL warranty is 90 days inless installed by a dealer OR INSTALLATION is approved by the dealer.... if it is then the warranty is 2 years.

After going around and around with the place I bought it from (6th ave electronics in NJ) and JL it will not be covered.

All I had to do was install the amp and go back to the dealer I bought it from and have them check and sign off on the install. This must be done the orignal sales recipt. This would have covered me for 2 years.

I went back to the JL dealer (6th ave) and they would not sign off on the install.

My problem is that only one channel stopped working. The entire amp is not burned up. This sounds like a warranty problem... not an install problem.

JL is supposed to be the best....you do not always get what you pay for!!!!

Actually, JL isn't the best. Regardless, sounds like an internal problem on the amp. To rule out posibilties, have you checked all the wiring? IE: speaker wires going from the amp to the box and the box to the sub? Just make sure they are still solid, and not frayed on anything and/or still connected. Generally a 5 channel amp is the only kind "approved" amp for running different styles of drivers. The general rule is one amp for the sub and another for the highs and mids. Ive seen amps in your aplication work well, but not last long since the internal circutry isn't actually designed for that sort of task. Basically what your doing is confusing the amp on the load that its being asked to handle. The 1 and 2 channels are being asked to handle a certain amount of load, and the 3 and 4 channels are being asked to run a seperate amount. The install/audio shop should have cought that when you took it back to them to get it "sighned" off. I do agree with the shop though. I wouldn't warrenty and products I sold and that I didn't install. Not accusing you that you don't know what your doing. When I was installing we wouldn't warrenty or take any kind of responsability for gear that wasn't installed by us. Its a liability and financial risk when shops do that. That is also the first time I have heard of a shop inspecting and sighning off another install. Personally I wouldn't warrenty any other installers or any one elses work. Just not a good way to do business to be honest.

Have you contacted JL directly? 954 443 1100 is their number. Give them a shout and ask them directly if there is anything they can do for you. They are located somewhere in FL, and I think that is there HQ.

If that falls through, Audiobahn, Phoenix Gold are actually the best of the best, and thats where you pay for what you get.

Goodluck and hope this helps!

Thanks Shott... just venting cause I feel like I got screwed.

If I thought I messed up the amp I would not put up the fight I did. I do not like to argue or get in peoples faces.

But there comes a point when you have to stick up for what you think is right and what you as a consumer of a high quality product deserve.

When you get that sick feeling in your stomach like someone just took advantage of you you tend to get a little vocal.. haha...

Oh well... it is over and done now...

I am going to send it to JL to fix for $120... and never buy anything from an authorized dealer again... because there is clearly no advantage.

for what it's worth kenwood has been good for me the past year still thumps like the day i put the amp in. of course i am just running a single mono block for my dual subs and not running speakers off of it, but for the price i could get the higher end kenwood or the low low low low low low low end phoenix gold....

if i've learned anything with circuits.. it's all luck.
