Header to Y-pipe seal question (Donut?)
I tried a search but could not come up with a clear answer....
I should be putting my exhaust on the weekend.
I am replacing everything from the head back.
I bought a set of headers and a Magna-flow direct fit cat.
When I hold the headers to the cat/y-pipe I do not see how it is going to seal properly.
I called Summit and they told me there is no "donut" between the header and y-pipe. It is a metal to metal... ball and socket joint.
I called the maker of the headers and they said if there is a donut in the stock exhaust switch it over... if not then bolt it metal to metal.
The first time you bolt new headers to a new y-pipe does the joint "bend" at all while you tighten it and form a tight seal?

Who is the maker of the headers? Ball and Socket connections are most common, and are the best. It's when they use a lead donut is when it starts to suck, b/c the lead deteriorates quickly leaving you with exhaust leaks. If you can take some pics of the collector end of the headers. I know Gibson's donuts are molded/forged into the headers as a whole single unit, and Edelbrocks are lead donuts you have to tap onto the headers.
there shouldnt be a donut. It may take a little elbow grease to get the Y pipe on but I wouldnt go yanking on it too hard or you will create a stress point between the two pipes at the cat end.
just out of curiousity where di you get the direct fit cat and (if you dont mind me asking) for how much?

Nope, your good to go. The donut sealer is molded/forged into the header, no seperate peice, witch is the best. They look sharp. What size primarys and what size flanges and how much? Stainless?
did you get those headers off of ebay?
If so I have the same ones. I love mine. I traded a set of tow hook brackets for mine. They mounted easy but I had to grind down in between the pipes because I wasnt able to remove my spark plugs with the straight pice being there.
