curious about differential
I have a 2000 dodge ram 2500 pickup and the rear has this numbers printed: DANA 248 09/07/95. Am I wrong to think that somewere in time this part has been replaced ?
It's possible...but it's also possible that the axle was actually cast on that date, and sat around until it was used on your truck. IIRC, the date on the rear axle of my truck is from 92 or 93...and my truck is a LATE 94 model.
This truck has a whining noise that becomes loud at 30 to 35 mph, the seal and the gears were replaced because the oil leaked. The previous owner got it from a dealer at 60000 miles, now has 116000, he recalls that the seal always leaked. The last repairman said that even changing those parts the truck will make a noise because the pinion bearing has damaged the cup and the housing and it needed another rear. I think that there is something strange going on here. If the cup was distroyed I believe that the play would be enough to lock the bearing and break the cardan. Thank you for your posts.
Problem solved: gears were never replaced by the mechanic. Missing tooth on the ring gear, pinion damaged also. $1200 repair with rebuilt kit ($690). Hard to trust in some mechanics. Found a good and honest one now. TGFT
