1998 Ram SST - EGR or no EGR tube???

OK, here goes. I hope that I'm in the proper area of the forum, I didn't see any tech specific areas. Anyway, I recently purchased a 98 SST, which to my understanding was nearly all original. I turned it over to my mechanic, who went through it from bumper to bumper, replacing everything and anything mechanical that was suspect. It passes PA emissions, and then he discovers that the EGR tube is rusted through. I call numerous Dodge dealers, and get the same answer at each - My SST, by Vin #, does not have an EGR tube on it. One parts person suggests that the engine has been replaced, I highly doubt that. I went to wholesalemopar.com and they list an EGR tube for a 98-99 5.9 for like $235 full list, but I'm not sure if it is for the diesel.
Any help, suggestions, advice, etc. would be REALLY appreciated at this point. My mechanic is no novice, but even he is frustrated at this point.
Thanks in advance, Dave

There is no tube listed in the parts book for the 5.9L gas. The one you have in your post is indeed for the CTD motor.
IIRC, I remember reading something about there being no tubes on the 98+ motors. I know when I emailed Gibson & JBA about headers for my V10, they told me that was the only difference between the 94/95 trucks and the 96+ ones as far as exhaust goes. But I see in the parts book they list tubes for 94-97 models. [&:]
Either way, if your truck needs one...just order one for a 94-97 motor. List is $38.60. www.chryslerpartsdirect.com price is $31.65.
WHY it needs one is a different question. It's true that your motor could've been replaced with an older one. It's hard to tell when it comes to a used vehicle. What's the build date on your truck? Maybe it was built in late 97 before they changed over to the newer emissions system.

The truck is still at the inspection station. I'll go and check the plate tomorrow, to see what the manu date is. Do you have any idea where the engine serial # is located, to see if I can match it to the vin #?The info is much appreciated, and no matter why it has the tube, at least I can order one to replace it and get this thing through inspection.[sm=smiley20.gif]

The engine serial # should be stamped in the left front corner of the block.
It should be in this format: X M AAA YYYY 0000
X = Last digit of model year.
M = Plant (M= Mound Road, S= Saltillo, T= Trenton, K= Toluca)
AAA = Engine Displacement
YYYY = Month/Day
0000 = Engine Serial Code

Any ( 1996 - up ) dodge 5.9L listed as light duty, will not have the EGR provision. Only on the ones listed or spec'd as heavy duty. Common in 2500 and 3500 series. The heavy duty setup runs dual cats, thats one indication if its heavy duty. My 1998 SST is light duty, therefore no EGR.
