Default Difficulty Starting

I have a 1996 Dodge Ram/1500, 5.7L V8 with about 100,000 miles on it.

Up until recently the truck started great, hit the switch, cranked a half a turn and fired up. Now I have to crank it and crank it until it starts. And when it does it idles very low and you have to give it gas to "bring it alive".

Now this only happens once the engine has set (not ran) for a short period, say 5 minutes or more. Once it starts you can shut it down and it cranks right up.

There are no codes, I pulled what was in there an only a misfire on cyl 8 was read, expected based upon the rough or hard idle once it starts.

Where do I begin trouble shooting? Any suggestions...........I'm thinking fuel. The fuel pump runs as soon as the key is on and "primes and stops" as normal. The guy at the local parts store says there is no fuel filter listed for the vehicle. This is hard for me to believe unless the pump and filter are integrated?

Any ideas?

There's lots of info here regarding the fuel pump check valve not holding pressure and causing this situation...the parts guy is right, there's no fuel filter to replace, it's part of the fuel pump/sending unit assy...the check valve is also part of the assy. and not replaceable seperately.

And do you mean 5.9 liter?

Mine did this for several months. If I let off the key and try again it would fire right up. Ended up being the fuel pump on mine.
