But the dealer is closed today, this is what the last nubers are on the frame "wj104251" it is suppose to be a 98 2500 4x4 diesel when he got stoped for speeding the vin off the dash came back as 1500 4x2 six cylender 94

The last 6 digits of the VIN# are the serial number. They don't mean anything as far as motor/year and can't be decoded by anyone but the dealer. And all they do is use it to lookup a build sheet.

The J in the digits you posted above is the assembly plant...St. Louis North (which would be right)

The W is the model year, which would be 1998.

If the VIN# in the dash is wrong, I'm guessing the truck has been in an accident at some point and the cab was replaced. Just a guess though.

How could the dash have been replaced? He said its a 98 and the vin came back as a 94. Those are 2 completely different dashes.

Maybe the wrong style dash is in there as well We don't have any info on the truck really (or pics), so it's hard to say for sure.

Either way, the vin plate in the dash is attached to the cab and not the dash. They maybe just forgot to switch the vin plate as 20dodgeram pointed out.

In some of the older trucks, like my Ramcharger, the vin plate is attached to the door. [8D] Not sure what the engineers were thinking back then, but you could EASILY end up with the wrong VIN by just switching the door [8D]

The vin you have above is a green '98 Quad 4x4.

They could be right about the cab being replaced.
But if they did that there would be a damage disclosure on your title. Did you have one?
If not, somebody has some questions to answer.

Not necissarily. Depends on whether or not the damage was reported....and who did the replacing. A lot of shady things can happen to a vehicle [:'(]
