How to reprogram the ECU for true dual exhaust
Hey everybody I have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 4x4 and i want to dual out the exhaust but a true dual exhaust i need to know how to reprogram the ECU so the O2 sensors will work with the new setup and dimension of piping and still pass emissions if anyone has any thoughts or could help that would be very appreciated thanks a lot
I don't think any reprogramming is necessary for true duals. At least I've never heard of anyone doing it before.
Do you have dual converters on your truck now? Do you have post cat oxygen sensors?

Ya, I think you just need the O2 simulator to make it work, but not sure if you can pass a visual inspection at emissions time with one of those in place.
This is what my exhaust has as of now. It is stock with 2 O2 senors on before the cat and one after the cat. also what is an O2 simulator? thank you everbody for helping.
It's a device that allows you to trick your PCM into thinking it is getting optimal O2 sensor input (usually for the post cat sensor) when in fact you have removed it completly or relocated the sensor to a less then desirable location. Going with true duals might require one since you will be cutting your O2 emissions in that pipe by 50% (since the other 50% is running over in the other pipe). I can't say for sure though since I do not have that setup. I know they work if you want to remove your cat without getting a CEL.
Maybe someone with a true dual setup will chime in here.

I have a 96' with a 5.9 and true dual setup. If I wasnt in Iraq right now I would send pics of my exhaust for you, but I will try to describe it the best I can. I have both pipes routed over to the passenger side running parallel with each other all the way back where they split in front of my spare tire. Now if you have two O2 sensors, one being in front of the cat and one being behind you can only put an O2 sensor on the one after the cat. If you cut off the one in front your check engine light will come on and your truck will constantly run either too rich or too lean. (Not that that happened to me or anything.) As far as a cat, I dont have one on right now. I used two flowmaster 40 series mufflers and I love the sound. Also you will want to put a crossover pipe as close to the exhaust manifolds as possible. Or maybe an X pipe if you can find one or have a shop fab one up. Either way your Pre-Cat O2 sensor will have to be plugged into the crossover pipe or it will only read one side of your engine. If I can convince my wife to crawl under my truck and take pics I will post them as soon as possible. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up.
Well here are the pics of my dual setup. Nothing like some good close up pics to make you realize how much rust can build up in a year of not driving. Anyways hope these work. If anyone has any questions hit me up.
