Default tranny/towing

Have 99 2599 w/5.9v8 which tranny do I have? How o I adjust the bands and what upgrades can I do? When towing with od on my 3rd gear slips but when od is off 3rd doesny slip. Plus really bad mpg towing 4quads on a 16' car trailer and no power. Its like driving my 86 ford w/6.9 diesel. Any help would be great. thanks

Welcome to DF!

Your truck has a 46RE transmission IIRC.

Band adjustment info here: http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmissio...T_band_adj.htm (NOTE: It is in in-lbs....NOT ft-lbs )

As far as upgrades, a deep transmission pan, larger transmission cooler, and a fully synthetic fluid like Amsoil or Royal purple will help the trasnmission life. But if it's starting to slip out of 3rd you might as well skip doing anything to it right now and look into having the transmission rebuilt. [&:]

I agree with Burning Rom. Had work on my 98 quad cab 2wd-360--v8 --3:55 axle c/w towing package.

Reason for repairs, towing in overdrive and thats from several dealerships that said it's ok. I tow a 5000lb. 5th wheel trailer.
Transmission shop (who's a dodge freak) told me that stop and go traffic drive in OD OFF MODE as well.
That goes for you dodge boys that plow snow in the winter months ------- OD OFF.

Cheers

I believe http://www.apsprecision.com/ has internal upgrades (valve bodies, shift kits) that you can purchase. It would also be a good idea to look into an aftermarket torque converter. APS should be able to help you out with that as well.
