I jave been using the 4x4 synth blend. I figured that both synth and standard Oil have their advantages, so why not take advantage of both!!

shott8283: Never heard of the ATF trick. I add a quart of Motor Flush just before every change and run it for about 10 minutes or so. Not a detergent but a solvent. Probably does the same thing. The ATF would be cheaper though ...

... hmmm ...

... awww ... why mess with what works?

Started my truck on Syn Blend at 118K, now I am at 150K with out any problems, I run it in everything I own. I end up using about 1 quart of oil every 10K, so not to bad if I say so myself. Be sure you get a good quality filter, A/C, Wix, Motorcraft are all real good filters, get the ones for the old 302 V8 Ford or 350 Chevy, it is the full size filter so you can hold a full quart of oil in the filter, instead of that tiny factory Dodge one.

I have had mixed results using synthetics, my 93 SHO I have run 5w30 semi synthetic since I bought it appox. 6yrs ago. Currently has 132000 on it with no problems at all. My 96 Ram 1500,5.9 I got 2.5 yrs ago with 60000 miles on the clock, I changed it over to 10w40 full synthetic , the cost of this change to date is appox. 2grand. in rebuilding the engine! Synthetics have a higher solvency rate than standard oils, all the carbon-sludge that was in the bottom end let loose and plugged up the oil pump pickup while on my way home from N.C. last fall.My advice to anyone going to a full synthetic in a motor with a lot of miles would be to drop the oil pan and check out the bottom end first, I think the previous owner of my truck must have used whatever cheapa** oil he found on sale, if he ever changed it.

yes, it is going throuh ALOT of oil.meaning 1-2 qts every thousand miles or so. and also I was told that you cant mix dino and syn. but obviously you can from what you guys are telling me. so my best bet is to switch back to dino? and this engine, as far as i know has never been rebuilt. do you think that is the way i should go?

Sure you can mix dino and synth.

Now I've HEARD that 1 quart every 1k miles is NOT excessive. I think it's a crock but that's what I've heard.

You just need to thicken up what you've got in the crankcase ... dyno ... synthetic ... doesn't matter ... I really don't believe it's got anything to do with the fact that the oil is synthetic.

I wouldn't go THAT far ... there IS a limit. In my other cars I would run GTX 20w50. Excellent oil. It's the only dino I would run. As you need to add oil each time, try adding that. You might see your usage rapidly decline over a few thousand miles.

Oh ... feel like reading? : http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/synth_oil.txt
