Default temp gauge ? when cold?

i have asked a few questions about this before, and just now have the time to look at it. i put a new sensor in (yes, the correct one), and it helped a little bit. but when the truck is cold or the sensor is unplugged, the temp wont go all the way down to the "dead" mark around 130. it stays about 150 when it is cold. which means that with the 180 t-stat at operating temp the gauge reads over 200. is there a way to reset the gauge to zero? i took the dash apart and tried moving the needle gently, but it springs back to past 130. the gauge worked properly until the t-stat went bad. is there a way to take the needle off and reset it where i want it without breaking it? any help would be great, truck is sitting in the garage right now.

You may want to get it hooked up to a scan tool, it will be able to read the temperature that is being sent to the PCM. You can check that against the dash guage. I don't know how to re-calibrate the dash guage, but one option is to abandon it and go with an aftermarket guage that you can put in a pod or other location. That's probably not what you want to hear, but it may be the easiest solution. At least that way you can get a guage with a little more precision than the stock temperature guage.
