1997 Dodge Ram Pick-up
Hi,
I'm new to this so bear with me, I gave my son my 1997 dodge ram 4X4 and bought an 2002 ram 4X4 for myself, the 97 is getting to the point that it's causing a few problems and because he doesn't want to give it up we have spent time lately working on it. Last weekend was the rusted out shackles for the rear leaf springs. Anyway maybe some one could help me with a smaller problem, when I bought the truck new I had a fiberglass cap put on it with a brake light installed. When it was put on they tapped the wiring by the left rear tail light, I can't seem to get 12volts to the brake light on the cap, pulled off the lamp and went directly to the battery and it works. If anyone has the wiring diagram for the tail light it would be appreciated. It has been a confusing trying to figure out what they tapped into for the brake light on the cap and also the dome light for inside the cap ( which only works with the headlights or parking lights on!)
Thanks in advance,
Tom L.

Don't know if the wiring was the same for the different years but it's worth a try (hope this link still works): http://www.neonix.org/nero/files/2001ramsrvcmanual.zip
Still learning how to move around in this forum, I think I replied to your e-mail/link, it still works and thanks again for the help, will let you know if I get it working this weekend.

If you get under the rear and use the wires for the trailer plug it might be easier to follow. My power for the interior light is tied to my parking lights too. They did that so we don't leave it on and run the battery down.
I had the same problem a few months ago wiring my truck cap. If the rear brake light in the cap is working, try turning on the turn signal (both ways) when the brakes are applied and see if the cap brake light flashes. If it does, you will have to re-wire the brake light. In the main wire loom which runs on the drivers side, there is a white and brown wire. On my truck, it was located in the loom just behind the rear axle. Look for the end of it, which should be sealed off. This should be the brake light wire that Dodge ran just for the purpose of installing a cap. Probe it first, I might be wrong on the color of the wire.
For the interior light in the cap, I have a 7-pin trailer wiring harness installed. I ran a wire back from the battery to provide 12-volt current to the plug. I just tapped into that wire to provide power to the interior light so I don't have to turn on the headlight switch. Running a wire back from the battery will be your only option if you don't have a 7-pin connector.
