Default 4x4 actuator on front axle question

hey guys and gals! quick question. on the front passenger side of the axle is the 4x4 actuator( my buddy calls it a servo). it kind of looks like a EGR valve turned sideways and i'm sure you know what I am talking about. should i be able to spin the top part with my hand? what is the proper name for this part because I want to buy a new one and replace it. a rough idea on the cost
would be great too!! thanks for all your help!! this forum has a bundle of great information.

also my brother-in-law has a 97 F150 and he said he could drag my truck down the road. I have a 99 2500 w/ 5.9 V8 and I
think it has some good power. Alot of people make fun of my truck and say it's junk. Are these trucks as bad as everyone
is telling me?

thanks again for the help and advise on the 4x4 front axle question!!

Tell them to put their money where their mouth is and hook up. I think what your talking about is the Vacuum shift motor. Not sure on the price though. But I don't think you should be able to turn it.

Junk wouldn't have 260,xxx miles on it and still out run and out pull alot of trucks on the road. I have a 97 1500 and just turned the clock on 260,000 all I have had to do is routine maitenance and I put a new tranny in at 256,000 miles. Being a 2500 you should have 4.10 gears and with that and 4lo there is no way that an f150 will ever drag you around.

AMEN to that!!!

not sure if your able to turn it or not.. ... but r u talking about the rubber hosed sections that go into the CAD system? if so i just got a whole new setup from my dodge dealer,, and they gave both hard lines and soft lines from the tcase to the cad for shy of 40 bux.. im not sure if thats what your talking about.. can you get a pic for us or atleast look in the manual and relay the part name to us so we can spec it out.. makes it alot easier..

They sell aftermarket systems as complete replacement that gets rid of the vacuum control at that point....Also strengthens that joint in the axle....It is a cable system so you know for sure you are in 4wd when pulled and out when pushed....I'll try and find it for you if ineterested, but I think my buddy put one on his truck and it went for about $150.00

im assuming your talking about the vacumme diafram on the side of the unit where the lines go into. that shouldnt turn. if you look theres a nut on it that you can tighten. also as said you can get a cable one for 150 buxs. al though i made the same thing for about $16.00

Your truck is so heavy, I think the 1/2-ton would have a tough time dragging you off your parking brake. A lot of people think that the 360 is pretty nutless but it's the biggest motor available in the 1500. It was considered beefy enough by Dodge to make it into the "serious" level of trucks so it was even available as a base motor in the 3/4 and 1 tons.

Tell me ... how many beers did your B-I-L have before he said this?

I talked to the dealer and they said it should not turn and should be replaced. I bought the truck w/ a 3yr 36000 mile warrenty and am
gonna have them take care of it.

as for my brother-in-law he keeps running his mouth about my truck. I bought the truck 2 months ago for $11,000(not including warranty) and it has 69,875 miles on it. It's the SLT Laramie 2500, black w/ the grey trim on the bottom. Came with Rhino liner, truck box, class 3 hitch, and power everything. I don't care about the overhead console but it is nice to see the temp. and mpg. He told me
that a reg. cab is a waste of money. This is a work truck for me so all I needed was 4x4, heat and a 8ft bed, anything else is just gravy! I get the feeling he is a little jealous and bitter because my Dodge rules and stands a lot taller next to his 97 F150 ext. shortbed.

thanks for all your help everyone!!
