Default Amount of oil required for tranny flush

I'm going to have my tranny flushed as well as getting a shift kit installed and bands adjusted. I am going to put in ATF+4 and I want to make sure I pick up enough oil. My friend at the tranny shop recently picked up the flush machine and is going to do the work for me. He only keeps ATF+3 in stock. The service manual says the tranny takes 20 pints (10 quarts) for the 46RE tranny for an overhaul, which would be replacing all the oil. Just wondering if anyone else had this done recently and knows how many extra quarts are necessary when using a flush machine?

My 97 needed roughly 13 and half. I remember that was a very expensive day at the amsoil store......

Napa and other parts stores are now carrying the ATF+4. I found it at Checker Auto for less than $4 per quart. That is a lot less expensivew than the stealership.

I checked at NAPA yesterday, they have Valvoline ATF+4 for around $4.68/qt. here. I called the local Dodge dealership this morning.

1 qt. ATF+4 - $7.50
1 gallon ATF+4 - $31.35 = $7.84/qt.

Can anyone explain why you pay more per quart when you buy a gallon than per individual quart?

I'm comfortable using the Valvoline brand. Seems like about 14 quart should do the trick.
