Default electric fan question(s)...

to those who've installed e-fans, does your controller allow for real low temps such as 100 deg F? I'm considering putting one in to help cool the intercooler down when it's really hot out. intake temps get to be 125 deg F & up and I thought an e-fan on the outlet side of the cooler would help. only problem is turning the fan on & off at the right temps.

i was looking at the controllers at advance auto when i did my fans. theres a few different types. as far as the programmable ones, there were two i saw. one was adjustable from like (approximately, dont remember 100%, but this is close) 160-240 degrees, and could handle up to 30 amps.

there was another one that was adjustable to a much broader range, from like 32-320 degrees, but could only handle 15 amps. for a smaller fan on an intercooler, i doubt it'd be drawing more than 15 amps anyway. i believe the price was about $20 for the 15 amp version.

It says it can be set to any temp... but I would call SPAL and talk to a tech....

I looked at their site and I thought it said something like the range was 160 to 210??? I forget, but it's worth a call tomorrow to find out.

the site says it comes factory programmed for 160 and 200 deg... so I'll have to call to find out if I can adjust that at all. it would probably be better to have it tied to the speed sensor somehow... that way if your going slow, it'll kick on and cool it down more.

well it runs/activates off the factory style temp sensor .. so pretty much you program it off the calibrated temp sensor.. i read the pdf manual for it and its kinda like hit or miss.. you have to start the truck..warm it up and to the point where you want your fans to come on (by monitering the in-accurate temp gauge) and program its low kick on temp and hits high kick off temp.. defantly not exact if you ask me.. i decided to sleeve my upper rad hose and in a in-water temp sensor that is calibrated to 185 on and 175 or 180 off.. and use that to activate my relays.. ill be dropping back down to a 60 amp 5 wire style relay instead of the 4 post 100 amp starter selenoids..mainly b/c they are large, ugly, and overkill for my setup..

OK, had a conversation (e-mail) with a spal tech and he mentions that they tried a e-fan setup on an f550 that they had at the shop and it was not enough to cool the motor under load. I asked him if he knew what the cfm ratings were on the fan(s) and he hasnt got back to me yet. As for the original goal of controlling the intake air temp... I was talking with a co-worker about it (always helps bring out ideas when discussing it) and have concluded that the best way to get control over the intake temp is to put a pusher fan on the front, tie in the IAT output to the spal controller and set it to kick on when I need it to. The Spal tech recommended tying it into the IAT somehow, seems to think that will work and be the best way to get the job done.

I have thought about the fan for a while. Anyone know how much hp and gas mi you gain with elect. fans. Although If your into mods I don't know know if gas milage is primary. and HP ain't free.
