transmission problem
I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 5.9 liter automatic 2wd. I was in a fast food drive through and I started hearing a chirping noise comming from the transmission, then it went into a grinding noise. Next thing i know it was like it was in neutral, give it gas and it goes no where. So i slide the shifter into the different gears and finally goes into gear after i put it in park and back into drive. I get about five hundred feet or so and then it goes out of gear, like it is back in neutral. Put it in park and then back into gear and goes again. i had to repeat this process all the way home every five hundred feet. The transmission feel fine when in gear and I suspect it's most likely related to the torque converter. Any similar situations or any Ideas?

I guess since no one has answered - I will be the bearer of bad news. Your tranny and converter have junked themselves. I f you are lucky, your truck is still under the 7yr-70k powertrain warranty. If that is the case, have the dealer fix it. If not - find a GOOD tranny shop with experience on Dodge trannies and have them rebuild it. OR - if you are mechanically inclined you can get a rebuilt tranny and converter and replace them yourself. Just be sure to flush the lines and cooler out before putting in the new one.
How about the fluid level for starters?
Don't forget, the Rams have to be checked in NEUTRAL after the tranny is warm. Before you leave though, check the stick and at least make sure there's some fluid in the system. If it looks low, add a quart at a time till it's just over the top of the x-hatched area. Warm it up and recheck.
If the fluid level is good, and it's clean....I would assume an internal problem.
Good luck.
