Default RPM Question

2000 5.9L 4x4 Driving down the road sometime the RPM will jump up 1-2 hundrad RPM then back down with no increase in speed. It only does it for a second or less. I thought there may be a problem with OD but I turned it off and it does the same thing in 3rd gear. Today on the way to work I was playing with it a little bit and if I accelerate smooth the RPM is smooth but if I let off the throttle then get right back into it the RPM goes high then back down where it should. Is this normal or what should I look at?

your TPS is noisey... swap it out and you'll be fine. 99% of the time this is the problem. there is one guy here who identified a wiring problem in the tranny that also caused a similar issue. start with the TPS, it's cheep and quick to swap out.

If you drive down the hiway with the cruise on it will jump 200 rpms or so off and on, on it's own. it is the torque converter locking and un-locking.

edit... and welcome to DF...

Thanks I will try the TPS. I do know that caused some problems on a Jeep Cherokee that I had. I guess I was thinking bad because I have heard of trans problems with these trucks.

And thanks for the welcome.

Just so ya know - the TPS can be purchased at any local parts store for around $35. It takes about 5 minutes and a "torx" screwdriver to swap it out. Reset the computer after you change it. Here is a link to tell you how to do that: http://www.v8performance.com/tipsandtricks.htm#ResetPCM

I just did a writeup on how to clean the TPS... did it on my 4.7 dak motor and it worked awesome. sorry to hear about your loss ($200)... did you have a shop swap it out or something? it takes less than 5 minutes to pull out. and that is taking your time.

Hey Steve, I think you should put back that other picture you had for your signature. The where you can see it on the hill from the front side angle, it looks badass with those rims and tires!
