Default fuel pressure?

Ive been having trouble with my truck starting. when i hook up my pressure tester and turn my key to the on position, i can hear the pump but the first and sometimes second time it wont register on the pressure guage. then it will jump up to about 45 (where it should be) and immediately fall back down (should it fall back down like that?) once it starts it stays at 45 with no problem at all.

my guess is i have to replace the pump. i cant find any leaks in the fuel lines. my leak detection pump squeeks sometimes but i cant imagine thats the problem.

so i turn to you... what do you think?

Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator? Should pump around 47lbs +- .07

how would i go about doing that? doesnt fuel go from there to the fuel rail? and considering that if it is the regulator do you think it would be benificial for me to replace the pump since im already there?

my fuel pressure guage only fits on the valve on the fuel rail

there is also a check valve in the pump assembly that keeps the fuel in the rail so it doesnt drain back. that valve may be bad.
