Default Rearend rebuild

I'm about rebuild the rearend in my 98 2wd with serious future (and present) off road plans, mostly baja/rally style. I need some suggestions on size and brand gears. Also I want to put some sort of locking differential in. I'm a novice(but learning quickly) gear head and plan to do as much as I can myself. Budget is also a factor.
Also, can I have my throttle body machined for improvement? I know most on here get the fastman, but I'm on a tight budget.

if your planning on jumping it, you'll probably want your axle gusseted/re-enforced.

How do I re-enforce my axles? I halfway look forward to things breaking so I can replace stock parts with performance.
I'm gonna begin to re-enforce the frame soon, as well. But the rearend sounds terrible. I was gonna do rebuild it a month ago but a trip to the tranny shop resulted in a rebuilt tranny. Didn't even fix the problem I took it in for (engine reving 200rpms, like it was sliding into neutral, on long trips). The beast still does it on trips of 60 miles or more, occasionally, but the rebuilder hasn't experienced it as he only drives it down the road, and runs the dtcs.
