Default 96 V10 2500 Transmission

I've heard tell that the transmissions in trucks of this genre are kind of weak. Recently mine has started to slip a little........not a lot, but noticeably, especially when cold. The trans fluid IS dirty and smells a little (not a lot) cooked. Will a fluid/filter change etc help or is it toast?

I'd definitely change the fluid and filter. While you're in there adjust the bands too. It'll help out a lot.

Seems like with this milage and the problem that a fluid flush would be better than a simple fluid/filter change.... Yes?

If the fluid is contaminated (as you say it is dirty and smells burned), then you'll need to get it all out or it will become re-contaminated when the new fluid put into the pan mixes with what is in the TC, etc.

Thanks. that;s what I figured. Any input on addatives like duralube or slick 50 (or something else) with the new fuild? Years ago I had a Dakota that was slipping between 2nd & 3rd..........added some Duralube and it worked perfectly for another 40K (when the engine blew).....Also, any recomends on fluid brands?

You need to use ATF+4. I forget which brand I used, it was a full synth though.. I remember that much. If you take it to be flushed out, make sure you confirm that they refill with ATF+4.
