I have a 96 3500 4x4 dually with a v10 and around town i get 10mpg. I use the truck to pull a 30' fifth wheel and average 7 to 7.5 mpg however it has been as bad as 3 mpg and as good as 8 mpg. Never checked it on the highway unloaded. As the others have said the power is unreal. I have compared it to a 98 3500 4x4 dually with the cummins 24 valve and its a toss up as to which has the more power. I can say that when i'm pulling a heavy load you can talk in a normal voice because the V10 is quite.

Tommygunz -

I've been talking to the guys I have worked with who bought V10's lately. Each had previously owned either 12V or 24V Cummins', and we were talking about fuel mileage.

Mechanic #1 used to drive a 96 club cab, long bed 12V CTD 4x4. He loved it, tweaked it with numerous mods, and remembers getting ~19mpg pretty consistently. Sold it to his son-in-law with high miles, but it's still going strong. He bought a V10, and was the reason I started looking at one.

Mechanic #2 had a 2002 quad cab short bed 24V CTD 4x4. Never did any mods to it, and never got any better than ~16mpg. I don't know enough about CTD mods to know if thats why his mileage was lower, or if it was the tire/gearing combo or what. He bought his V10 this past summer. All three of us are getting between 11.9 and 12.8 mpg, which is pretty tight considering we each use our rigs in completely different ways.

Anway, they give us real world examples of a possible range of fuel mileage for a used CTD. The web site www.montanagasprices.com shows gas in Great Falls to be $2.29, and diesel is $2.47 (I'm extremely jealous, by the way). Assuming you've got a 1000 mile drive back to Minnesota (it's 750 to Moorhead from G-Falls, so I added 250 to get a nice round number) here are the possible scenarios:

Best V10 mpg: 12.5, fuel cost $183.20
Best CTD mpg: 19, fuel cost $130.00

Worst V10 mpg: 10, fuel cost $229.00
Worst CTD mpg: 16, fuel cost $154.38

So you could possibly save a maximum of $99.00 per 1000 miles with a diesel, or a minimum of $28.83. Reality will lie somewhere between the two.

If you drive 1K miles a week, the extra $5000 to $8000 cost of a CTD would certainly be worth it. At 1K miles a month, maybe not.

Back when these trucks were new, and the price differential was much smaller, the smart money bought the diesel. And on the used market over the years those guys have been rewarded handsomely, while the poor original V10 buyer took a beating. But now, I believe the clever buyer will take advantage of those depressed prices.

At least that's what I try to convince myself each month as I write the check for my truck payment!

My big question is are the Cummins motors really that much more reliable than a gas motor? I had a 99 and I had to replace my lift pump twice in a span of 3 years and 30,000 miles. If you read the Forums you hear how reliable the engines are, but there are also many problems, especially with the 24 V versions, early ones had the KDP problem, the "53" block, injector pumps that were problematic, each of these 3 problems could easily = over 3000.00 to repair, not to mention the lift pumps, and transmission problems with the autos and the NV4500's the transmissiions seem to hold up well behind the V10, but are overwhelmed by the cummins, especially if you modify it. So far I have put ~2000 miles on my V-10 with 300 of them towing, my overall fuel economy has been 11.5 MPG, my Cummins in the same enviroment would give me 16. The V 10 is also nice because I can leave it running at a drive thru window and still hear the PA system. The V10 is also more fun to drive IMHO

Anyone know the weight of a V10 vs weight of a CTD? Power/weight would be interesting to know...

I own a 95 2500 4x4 Club Cab LB V10. Bought it new in Jan 95. Currently has 88.5K miles. Have kept complete maint/milage logs. Overall AVG MGP is 11.69. When I drove it to work everyday (70 mile round trip), my MPG was 12.54. Have since then retired and only drive about 300 miles per month, mainly within my neighborhood, and am getting only about 10 MPG (but then the thing never even gets up to operating temp).
Mechanically, have hadNO problems with engine. Did have to replace the transfer case, and have had to repair AC system 3 times.

Have really loved my truck, but am looking at a 08F250 King Ranch because I wand a crew cab with 4 captains chairs. IfDodge offered a Crew Cab with a V10 and 4 buckets, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I have a 01' HD2500 4X4 Quad Cab Sport (Red) V-10 Auto with 41,000 miles that I'm looking to sell.
It has a extended MOPAR warranty that expires on 11-08-07 or 50,000 miles. This is NOT the powertrain only warranty, this covers power seats, the heated mirrors and so on. I'm located in Northern Ohio (44889) if anyone is interested.
BTW, I called my local dealer approx. 3 months ago to find out what exactly my truck was equipped with or not. The Parts Dept. Manager ran my VIN, he then stated that my truck had every option except Cummins-Leather-8ft. I asked bout the front and rear diffs, he said the front was a Dana 60 and the rear as either a Dana 70 or 80 (I can't remember). It does has have the off road pkg. plus snow plow pkg., fatory Mopar hitch plus a brake controller in the cab.
