I had a #5 misfire code just last week when I started up my truck after work.

I decided the first thing I would check when I got home would be to "read" the spark plug and troubleshoot from there. I had just replaced the plugs and wires a couple months ago, but I was in still in town, so I stopped at the parts store and picked up 1 spark plug just in case.

I'm really glad I picked up a spare plug!!! When I pulled the wire off the plug almost half of the insulator came off with the wire! The spark plug had literally broken in two and only the rubber boot on the plug wire was holding it in place. So, I simply replaced the spark plug, disconnected the battery for 15 minutes to reset the computer, drank a couple of ice cold Buds, hooked the battery back up and life is good!
