1996 DODGE 3500 4X4
I HAVE A 1996 DODGE 3500 4X4 WITH A V10 ENGINE 84,000 MILES. THIS TRUCK WILL BURN 4 1/2 QUARTS OF OIL IN 3 HOURS IDLING AT 1200 RAM. I HAVE JUST REPLACED THE VALVE STEM SEALS WITH NO CHANGE. COMPRESSION IS BETWEEN 120 AND 160. TRUCK STARTS AND IDLES GOOD.
I THINK THE INTAKE MANIFOLD MUST BE BAD.
IS THIS A GOOD CONCLUSION OR DO YOU THINK RINGS NEED REPLACEMENT?
ABOUT 7 OR 8 PLUGS SHOW OIL RESIDUE AFTER 3 HOUR IDLE. TRUCK SMOKES LIKE A MOSQUITO SPRAYER.
1 QT OIL DRIPS OUT THE EXHAUST IN 3 HOURS AT 1200 RPM.

I THINK THE INTAKE GASKET IS OK. I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK WITH THE INTAKE OFF ( HEADS ON) AND NO PREVIOUS HISTORY OF WHY THE MANIFOLD WAS REMOVED.
IT IS POSSIBLE THE NEW GASKET WAS NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY BUT I DOUBT THIS. THE MANIFOLD LOOKED OK BUT WE DID NOT PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE CASTING.
COULD BAD RINGS CAUSE THIS HUGE AMOUNT OF OIL CONSUMPTION WITH OIL ACTUALLY COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST PIPE OR IT THERE SOME OTHER POSSIBILITY?
COMPRESSION IS FAIR AND ENGINE STARTS AND IDLES AT ABOUT 600RPM. WE INCREASED IDLE TO 1200 RPM FOR 3 HOURS ON 2 OCASSIONS TO TEST CONSUMPTION.
I DOUBT IF YOU COULD DRIVE THIS TRUCK 10 MILES AT 50 MPH WITHOUT EMPTY CRANKCASE.
WE DID A WET COMPRESSION TEST AND READINGS INCREASED 20 TO 25 LBS PER CYLINDER.
THE PLENUM GASKET HAS BEEN CHANGED TWICE ONCE ON ORIGINAL ASSEMBLY AND AGAIN WHEN WE INSTALLED NEW VALVE SEALERS TO TRY AND CORRECT THE SMOKING.
