Default Check engine light

My light came on about two days ago.The truck actually seems to be running better.I tried the key thing and didnt get any blinks.Do you need a scan tool on the 98s?

my guess would be oxygen sensor sensing a rich condition, cutting back the fuel, makin u run lean, givin more power.

You do need the code scanner for the 98's and some of the early 99's. The key trick does not work on these years.
