Default Transfer case wont stay in 4hi

OK I have a 97 1500 with a 231D case and It keeps poping out of 4hi. When it does the shifter moves back to 2hi by itself and of course I must shut it down to stop all the grinding and get it back in gear.I have checked the linkage and changed the fluid but no help. If anybody could please give me some pointers on where to look next I would be very thankful. Could a vacume problem cause this? I have cleaned the vacume switch on the case and I am only getting 12hg vac out of the case. Thank you Ken Hutt

You checked the linkage huh? The only thing I think it could be is that its not engaging all the way so the linkage is off [&:]

Worn shift fork in the case? Adjuster loose or broken? That sucks that it won't stay in 4 wheel.

Good luck.

i had a problem with mine not to long ago where i could move the lever around but it wouldnt engage.. i had to put it in 4hi and go about 30 mph for it to engage. but it aint doing that anymore.. just the linkage again.. make sure its not slipping anywhere. if not maybe your case is going??

Thank you guys for your thoughts. It might snow tonight so this really bites! Is it possible a vacume leak could cause this kind of problem? What else would cause a low reading out of the switch? I am stumped. Thanks again for your help, Ken

Yeah baby! Got it! After thinking on this one for some time I decided to drain the case again and check the poppet spring plunger out. As it turns out, the plunger was on the wrong end of the spring,(in the nut), and the spring was twisted up in the hole and stuck. Well I got it out and re-bent the spring then put it in AFTER the plunger and needless to say I am very happy now. Thanks to all, Ken
