Default spark plugs - couple questions

i've read from one of hank's long posts if you have pinging problems (or suspect you do) you should try starting with a smaller gap. should you also stay with a warmer plug? i thought i read that you should but not sure now. i want to see if i actually do have pinging so i figure if i'm messing around with plugs and stuff might as well try to get ones that could possibly eliminate it if it is the problem.

right now im looking at either champions or autolites, not sure which heat ranges. truck says gap at .040", so maybe i'll gap at .035" and see.
