Default 97 dodge ram 1500 4x4

Hi, I'm new to this so bare with me. I own a 97 ram 1500 4x4 360 short bed, a few days ago the transmission went out with no warning. I was running 65mph slowed down & went to give gas to go again and the truck would not move. There was no warning we never had any slippage or grinding in other nothing. Could you please help me with a solution to fix my truck. It only has 88,000 miles on it, we changed fluid and filter about a year ago

Does the truck move at all? If the tranny burned up, it should have gone into "limp mode" which locks it in 2nd gear so you can get it to a service shop. Unless you had a catastrophic failure I would think it would at least do something. Is there any noise coming from anywhere under the truck? Check the rearend gear, set the brake and put tranny in gear while a buddy looks under the truck to see if the driveshaft is turning. If it is, the rearend broke. You could have a broken input shaft in the tranny, the transfer case could have broken something internal, etc. Whatever it is - there should be some noise coming from whatever part that broke.....

Welcome to the site! There is a service manual download in the "2nd Gen Ram information" sticky at the top of the page listed as "Merry Christmas Thread" check that out too.....

No we hear no noises, we have checked all linkages seem to be good, truck will drag while trying to move it, it was an all the sudden thing we never had a warning. We are able to go thru the gears and it goes in fine, but when you give it gas when its in gear it drags, like something is holding it back. Also I am unable to find the merry christmas link on this page in order to get tranny diagram can u help. Thank u so much for your time.

Has anyone made sure the fluid is good and the level is currently ok? Not ball breakin. They have to be checked in neutral and warm as well.

Good luck with your ride.

There are a few things you can do to help you eliminate the tranny as the cause. I would get it up on jackstands (all four wheels) start the truck and put it in drive and see if the back tires spin. IF they spin you know the tranny is probubly not the culprit. If they do not spin I would then remove the rear drive shaft and engage 4wd and see if the front tires spin. If they spin the tranny is probubly not the culprit. I would then start checking the rear breaks and the read differential.

does anybody have the 97 ram service manual. I found the 2001 service manual, but my truck is a 97. We need to pull the tranny out and rebuild it. We have found out that it is an internal problem. I would like to thank everyone who tried to help me with this problem.
