Default 4 wheel drive problem

have a problem i cant seem to figure out. i was hearing a noise when i would make a turn it was a grinding noise. in the front wheel. and when i put it in 4 wheel drive the front would lock up and nut let the tires turn. i thought it was the hub bearing. today i found out the u joint was shot. cap on 2 sides had craked into pieces and no needle bearings left in those caps so i replaced that one that was bad. but im still having the problem i can drive straight in 4 wheel drive but cant turn or it binds and the front tires wont turn.
its a 99 quad cab 1500

does sound alot like a u-joint problem to me.. if it drives straight fine in 4wd then i know its nothing with the gears.. just when the wheels turn.. hmm. does it happen in 2wd too? is that when you hear that grinding noise?? if possible i'd jack up the entire truck and put it on jack stands.. put it in 4hi and just turn the wheel and see where its coming from

hmmm good idea,.... it was making the noise realy bad in 2 wheel drive also but only when i turned. when i jacked it up and looked at the u jiont it was toast. 2 caps were cracked and had no bearings left... but i figured after i replaced them it would be fine. no it isnt grinding anymore. but it still locks up while in 4 wheel drive on a turn. i cant back out of my drive way in 4 wheel because when i turn the weel they bind and lock up.... im at a loss. drives fine straight.

I'm gonna guess that since the last post in the thread was from 3 years ago that he either got it fixed or sold the truck.
