Reverse lights staying on while in drive.. help!
Hey all..
First of all thanks for the earlier reply about my transmission problems.. The guy who suggested that it mightve been the front kickdown band was right to a point.. It didnt need adjusting, it was broke [:@] . 2 grand later for a rebuild and im back with another question.
Soo.. Not too sure how long this is been happening, but my Reverse/Backup Lights are staying on while the truck is in Drive/1st/2nd. The only time they do go off is in park.. So my question is this: What would be some possible causes? One follow up.. Would the tranny being rebuilt possibly be related?
I have five days from today before the nice Police Officer's warning turns into a ticket.. Any and all idea's welcome!
Thanks again for those who replied to my last post =)

my friends 02 ram did that.. it would go off when he slammed the tailgate down or jumped on the bumper lol.. try doing that and see what happens.. could be a loose ground or something.. check all the wires coming from the taillights and make sure none are split and touching
mine did it at one point also.
i had sand and water in the wiring harness for the rear tail lights.
my co workers work van did it too. ground was snapped off.
i would pull your tail lights apart and pull the light bulbs out one at a time and check to see if it resolves the problem. if that doesnt work, go under the truck and follow the tail light wires back about a foot to the wiring harnesses and pull them apart and check for corrosion, etc... when you put the bulbs and harnesses back together use some dielectric grease.
i'ld put all my money on a shi**y ground.

How can bad grounds be the problem? The fact that the reverse lights stay ON is proof that the grounds are good. I would check the reverse light switch. I have all the 95 manuals but I loaned them to a buddy who's doing some tranny work. I will have him check the location of the switch. It has to be on the tranny somewhere, perhaps the linkage. It would have a simple two or threewire connection.I can't remember if it's a reverse switch by itself, or if it's a reverse/neutral safety type switch. I would bet the switch has simply done it's time. 12 years is a good run for ANY Dodge part...lol.
One of these switches is probably what it looks like. Be careful though, the tranny temp sensor may look similar. It is only 2 wire though.
You can always pull the bulbs or yank a fuse to keep the lights dark until you resolve the problem. Tell the cop to go pound salt.
Good luck with your ride.

Agree w/Diesel, have had this problem before on non-Dodge vehicles and the switch was the cure, the plunger boot was old and held the switch in. Goodluck
