rpm drop, tranny issue - please help
Ok, first things first. I have a 95 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 on 38's with 3" of body lift and about 8" of suspension lift. Its got the 5.9L with an automatic with overdrive. Not sure on the transmissions model number.
Now for the problem. I hooked up to a uhaul car hauler, and pulled a car home. I will never rent a uhaul ever again. After I unhooked, it pulled an electrical f@# job on me. I lost my hazards, turn signals, brakelights, as well as the tranny started acting up. Brakelights was a fuse, hazards and turns ended up being the flasher unit. The transmission would "forget " to shift. When starting driving it would shift 1-2 fine, but forget it would forget to shift 2-3 3-4 4-overdrive. Also when coming to a stop it would downshift only as low as 2nd gear unless I manual shifted it from drive to 1. I would help it "remember" by stepping on the gas hard and letting off a few times and it would usually shift, if that didnt work I would put it in neutral and rev it and then drop it back down into drive and then it would shift into the next gear. I also noticed while when I step hard on the gas and let it up it feels exactly like a manual transmission. It feels like its a mechanical connection from engine to transmission. The kicker is that if I was crusing at some speed and let off the gas pedal the RPM would drop to idle but the truck would still coast as if it was in neutral. When I hit the gas to bring it back up to the speed its supposed to be it would feel as if it was in neutral until you got to the right RPMs per speed and then you feel the power instantaneously kick in.( like you drop a clutch) Now I have replaced both vehicle speed sensors (the tranny and the rearend) and this has helped a little. It still "forgets" to shift 2-3 but works fine past that and when coming to a stop it will downshift all the way down to 1 like its supposed to. However as well as the 2-3 shift problem it still does the RPM drop/shift deal. I am at a loss. Tried to take it to AutoZone to get the codes read, but they couldnt find the port to plug into the scanner. Speaking of which where is the scanner port on the 95 Ram? Please note that when it does shift, it shifts extremely smoothly, so I dont think it a tranmission problem, I think its more electrical. However I dont know much about automatics and personally I hate them. Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated. I would perfer not to take it to a tranny shop because I dont like other people working on my cars. Thanks for the help in advance.

i'm not going to be much help.

here's a post about 'limp mode', but according to the thead, that only started in 3rd gen ('02). If you have any electrical connections to your trans, then its likely the computer is controlling the trans by 'telling' it to shift. then its up to the electronics, solenoids, etc, to perform the shift.
it sounds like you need to see a transmission man. try to find one with a good reputation. You may be risking more damage by continuing to drive it. some people try to repair trans, some people try to rebuild theirs, some go with rebuilt/swap.
i think the most important thing is ..how much is it going to cost and how long is the warranty..
good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I am going to take it to a tranny shop tomorrow. I will repost what they come up with that way if any one else has this problem they can use this for reference. Thanks again for your post.
mine did the same thing( 86 the electrical ) ended up costing $2400! tranny was fried, TQ kept "washing out" check your check ball in the line connected to the cooler in the radiator, sometimes they get stuck, also check your fluid to see if its discolored or burning up
How many miles does it have on it? I know in the 01 4x4's they have been known for blowing the torque converter, have that checked too. If you take it in have the mechanic hook up a tester and check your computer to see if it gives a code about the issue.
