Default trailer fuse blowing

The 40 amp trailer fuse in the distibution panel is blown. I have a short somewhere on the truck itself (1998, 5.9Ltr, 2WD, SLT / with towing package). I have a haynes repair manuel but i can not piece together a complete trailer diagram. Some components are not shown ie (the trailer relay) . I would like to find the problem without opening all of my wire bundles. Can anyone help me with a complete diagram so that i can isolate the short . I looked at the obvious probable causes, like down by the hitch thinking that maybe something hit on my undercarriage and shorted a wire but no such luck. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

you could check with the dealer the service department might be able to help you out. I haven't seen any TSB's on it but there could be one. Also mitchel.com deals with all types of automotive wiring you might have to pay for it but they might be able to help

Your 40 amp fuse is blowing WITHOUT the trailer connected? If so, the first place I would look is the connector on the hitch. It has four screws that come off and then one more so you can disassemble the receptacle. My plug rotted out simply because of poor sealing on the back. There's a wire that's constantly live. I believe that is for charging the breakaway battery, or for trailer accessories.

The wire could have broken on the backside of the receptacle, and shorted out against the ground wire.

If that's not the problem, then all you can do is inspect the underside of the PDC, and check the wiring all the way back. Make sure there are no shorts near the brake light switch too. That's where most installers tap in for the elctric brake controler.

Just a suggestion, I'm no authority......if you do find that the receptacle is the problem, and have to replace/rewire it, load the back AND front sides with dielectric grease. Clamp down on the wires, then cover each screw with a gob of the electrical grease. Same with the front side. Then take your trailer plug and coat that as well. Makes all the connections stay corrosion free.

Good luck with your ride.
