I got a new 1500 5.9.... seems way underpowered. please help
Hey I recently bought a 2001 dodge 1500 5.9 liter manual short bed short cab...
Anyways, it seems way underpowered for a 5.9... It has a new K&N filter in it, and only 60,000 miles on it, so i doubt its the cats... I dont feel alot of power untill around 2300rpm... I cleaned out the throttle body, intaike manifold... The were both grody.
Would it help if i got new headers?? The stock ones look wayyy to small for good air flow...
If you have any info or comments... PLEASE HELP!!!

look on your PCM (silver box with all plugs going into it) on the passenger side firewall to see if it has some sort of sticker on it that say something along the lines of "authorized reprogramming"
you don't want to see that

its the death flash. someone else can tell you what to do to get rid of it, i cant remember if a hypertech does or not, but basically teh factory retarded the timing of your engine to reduce ping, but it also reduced power significantly. its fixable, and the difference will make your truck seem rocket fast afterwards.
ok cool... So I am 17 and just started to work as a grunt worker at an auto shop... If he has the programming for dodge than can we program it not to retard the timing?? Or do i have to buy a hypertech or something?? Thanks so much guys... sorry im new to dodge, i love the truck, just want more power!!
So any more info on the reprogram would be greatly appriciated!!!
Thanks!

you can search death flash for more info, or just wait for more intelligent people than me to post. haha.

Probably no need to purchase the $300 hypertech when you can do the free Crankshaft Position Sensor Modification.
Do a search on the forum here for the "Death Flash" and you will see exactly what needs done. There are "Many" message strings that talk about this mod so finding the information should be easy. It takes less than an hour and can be done with a wrench ( I think 13mm to 15mm) and a file. The instructions say to extend the mounting holes in both directions but I recommend only elongating them to allow the CPS to move toward the side of the engine where the oil filter sits. That allows you to easily set the CPS back to the stock position if you need or want to.
The CPS mod will advance your timing approx 4 degrees which will offset the "Death Flash" programming that Dodge put in. You will notice more horsepower, but you will probably also a decrease in MPG.
