question about front u-joint rplacement...
So a few weeks ago, I replaced the badly needed driver's side u-joint (at the steering knuckle). Because of time and the fact it was ok, i left the passenger side one alone. Well, wouldn't you know it, it's now going bad too.
My question is this: with the vacuum actuated front axle, do i have to do anything before I take out the pass. side axle to replace the u-joint? I thought I read somewhere that you have to engage the 4wd before removing the axle, but for the life of me can't find where i read that...

You are supposed to put it into 4-wheel drive when doing the passenger side u-joint, however when i did mine i forgot and everything went fine.
Just did my 96 IAW this http://www.pavementsucks.com/tech/hub.php
It's all you need and no, no mention of engaging 4W Hi to remove the axles. Plus, chances are if one side is shot, so is the other. Besides, it doesn't take that much more time/effort to do both sides in one afternoon.
I changed both sets of joints, wheel bearings and upper/lower ball joints. I highly recommend using your local NAPA (having all parts on hand before you start), good penetrating fluid, a good portable bearing press, large bench-viseand a free afternoon.
Best of luck nd let us know how it goes.

yeah, i knew that the other one would probably need to be replaced soon, but at the time I wasn't able to do it. The left side took twice as long because it was pretty difficult. How difficult? well it took me heating the yoke end with a torch, and pressing the caps out with a air hammer to get it out.
I pulled the axle out yesterday to replace the u-joint. had a hell of a time getting 1 axis out just like the driver's side. So I ended up taking it to a driveshaft place today to press it out because i was tired of it. Turns out the ears that hold the end caps in place are bent
So i need to budget for new axle now since this will likely make the new u-joints fail in a few thousand miles...
Anyways, the old joint deteriated so fast that this is what the caps looked like in a matter of a couple hundred miles. The cap didn't break on removal, it was like that. note the fine powder of rusty dust that use to be the needle bearings. lol :
