Cold weather O/D lockout
Hi guys. I was reading over in google dodge truck forum (forgive me) that starting in '96 Dodge put in a tranny safety feature that keeps the tranny out of O/D in cold weather, this true? Just wondering because today , in -35C temps, -47 with windchill, my O/D wouldn't kick in. Had 'er in the warm shop at work for about 20 minutes checking my tires. Took off and it shifted into O/D just fine. Stopped for gas about 10 minutes later, took off again and she wouldn't shift up again all the way home. About a 30 min. drive.
Yea, I've read that also. I think the temperature of the oil has to be around 40 F to it to go into OD. That is one nice thing about the fluid running through the radiator, it will pick up heat once the thermostat opens up.
This is straight from the 2001 Owners Manual:
NOTE: If the vehicle is started in ambient temperatures of -5F (-21C) or below, the transmission will not shift into Overdrive. Normal Overdrive operation will resume when the ambient temperature has risen to approximately 2F (-17C).

O.K. thanks. Sounds like it was just too cold for the tranny. Being in a warm shop for a short while was probably just enough to let it kick in the first time. Think I'll change the tranny temp sensor anyway, where is it located on a 5.2?
