Transfer case
Well it seems my transfer case finaly gave up on me afte 264,xxx miles. I went out last night to pull my buddies 1 wheen wonder ford out of his yard and all I got from my transfer case was alot of loud popping and the front wheens wouldn't turn. After afew good tugs in 2wd though I finaly got him pulled. I am asuuming I have most likely stripped the gear. The fluid was recently changed in the last 2000 miles and I have been getting some popping when in 4wd the past few months and I have been expecting it. So I was wondering has anybody rebuilt the own transfer case and how hard was it to do. Also how much can I expect to pay to have somebody else rebuild it.
sounds like a shift fork if its just a heavy banging. as its trying to engage and cant. mine did the same thing. the transfercase is actually really easy to work on. its a great confidence booster since all though it seams hard its really not. i pulled mine part with it still in the truck. to have one rebuilt will cost u about 200-350 dollars. u could also find a used one in a junkyard for anywhere from $250-500 depending on were u live and such. i can try to dig up some pics to give u an inside look at the case if u want
Those pics would help out alot Tani. I am still debating on doing it myself or not. I've known for awhile my Tcase was going south especialy after my father took my truck on a 100mile road trip in the ice and when he got back there was no fluid in the tcase. I also experience a slight whine every now and then when taking off or accelerating hard that I have pinpointed to the tcase. The tcase isn't popping out of 4wd it is staying engaged but I would get a loud pop every now and then and now it just sounds like the chain jumping the gears inside.
