I had to put my truck in the shop yesterday because of the tranny. Over $2000 in damage. Glad I got a 3 year warranty when i bought my truck.

Could one in theory have the death flash without the sticker?

Yes they did the death flash that far back. On my 1999 it was done in 2001 to get rid of pinging. I did not complain of pinging but loss of mileage, power and a ticking not pinging noise. Flash did not help it just made mileage worse and low end power worse. Long story short it was eventually diagnosed as intake manifold gasket which seems to be a common problem that causes most the pinging problems with these trucks. I used the Hypertech to get rid of flash and trucks power is much better. Mine will light up the tires from a dead stop without the brake.
