Default 01 2500 Breaking caliper pins/bolts

Ok,
My trucks a 2001 2500 series Cummins turbo diesel.
I have replaced the right front caliper bolts many times now, It keeps randomnly breaking the bolts that retain the caliper to the spindal.
My truck is a 5 speed, so it not like I use the brakes alot. But yet when I have to use them " I had to slam the brakes on today and low and behold, tyhe upper caliper bolts broke.

Any others?
Thanks
kawram

Take the broken bolt to a leaf spring shop. They will sell you a bolt with more shear (tensile) strength. The entire bolt can be threaded. A shoulder bolt is not necessary. Now add about an extra 20 ft/lbs of torque when you tighten them down. Make sure the slider pin is lubed on the caliper side. Then fill the inside of the slider pin with caliper lube, and push the bolts thru. You can use the silver anitsieze crap too. This will hinder any rust build up on the boltfor a long, long time.Keeps any water out as well. You'd want to spray the bolts with a light coat of primer or paint. Wrap tape around the end of the threads and the paint the rest. Use an enamel for heat. I painted mine yellow. They have been in for about 3 years now. I snapped both fronts, 2 x each.

You should have no problems after that. All that chages is the bolts will be hex head if they don't have allen head bolts.

Hope this helps.

Good luck with your ride.

Demon.. are you sure about the extra torque? bolts have a limit before stretch occurs. when you get the bolt as he recommends make sure it's a grade 8 or higher bolt. or get it from the dealer. a weaker grade 5 or so bolt may be your problem

welcome to DF... stop by the CTD forum under the ram section and have a look. we have a diesel rollcall thread at the top if you'd like to introduce yourself and your ram...

I crank the bejusus out of mine. I put 55-60lbs to them. Mainly because they are tougher, and are screwing into steel as well. The advantage, to me.....is I have MUCH less caliper flex. SS flexs no doubt, but you'll need 2x the force to stretch one of these.

Anyway, how's ur ride?

humm, I've never had an issue with caliper bolts or calipers before so I've only tightend them to spec. I do plan to put powerstop pads & rotors on when the time comes... had them on my 2000 and loved them. put them on the wifes old dak and she loved them... they are an awesome upgrade that cost only about $40 bux more than what napa was going to charge me for theirparts.

Anyway, how's ur ride?
my ride? lovin it! looking forward to a fuel cooler mod and possibly fabing my own CAI for it. also at the same time, considering another exhaust mod. man I hate being a motorhead sometimes... [&:] can never leave well enough alone
