I believe that you are talking about this:

If so, I've pulled my buddies Expedition out of mud before using it, but I didn't actually tow anything with it.
I think I'd get a proper hitch to do real towing.

A couple years ago i got a call from a friend whos car broke down in SC. So being the good guy i am i drove there an towed him home. I had a hitch an all but somthing with the trailer they rented wouldnt allow it to hookup. I can't remmber why but i had to tow the car from SC to Sebastian,Florida. The truck an bumber did fine but i wouldnt recomend it. That was a fun trip.

Old thread but since I was researching the exact thing - here is the official statement from my dodge manual:

Factory installed rear step bumpers are rated at class 3 hitch.

Mine is a 2001 dodge 1500 crew cab 5.2L v8 fyi

According to Reese:
Class III hitches used as weight carrying are rated up to 6000 lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) with a 600 lbs. maximum trailer tongue weight (TW)

https://www.reese-hitches.com/learni...towing-classes

Its important to factor in the weight of a trailer (if towing a boat) AND the loading of the trailer. If the wheels are too far back or in the middle you might have issues, ANY swaying on the roads is VERY dangerous. Be alert and safe - remeber braking distances triple easily in rain / etc...
