2000 Dodge 4x4 - Tranny Troubles
Just thought I'd sharethe troubles I've been having with my transmission. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
I purchased my truck around the first of November last year. It's a 2000 Dodge Ram 4x4 Ext cab with the 5.9l and the 46RE tranny. It ran great for about a month. Only glitch I've noticed is it shifting into 3rd right after the converter unlocking and then shifting in to OD and then right after the converter unlocking. After reading many posts about the Ram's TC, I've discovered thisis the norm.I'm a light foot driver anyways so it wasn't a big deal. Around the first of December, my engine light came on so I hadthe codes ran on it at the same place I bought the truck. It was the infamous P1740 code. The mechanic explained to me I needed to replace the TC and OD silenoid. So I gave the go ahead. After I got the truck back, it would not shift in to OD when it was cold. After driving the truck 30 miles or so, it would finally shift in to OD. To my understanding the mechanic had replaced the selinoids with the wrong parts. After getting my truck back a second time i was good to go for a few days and then my engine light came on again. Same codes - p1740. I ran the truck a few days and then I started getting a shuddering around 50mph at low throttle. Took the truck back to the mechanic for the 3rd time, and it was determined the TC was shot. So I gave the go ahead to replace it. They replaced the TC and the truck did great for about 5 days and then it went crazy on me. I was taking my son to school and when I made a stop at the end of a dirt road, the truck started vibrating almost as if I had not pressed the clutch in. I dropped the truck in neutral and then back to drive, it was fine. Got on the highway, the truck would not shift in to 3rd. Dropped it in to N then back to D. It was fine. Made another stop, same thing again bad vibration as if it was a manual and I hadn't press the clutch in. SO, I'm taking it back again in the morning hoping it's a faulty TC and not needing a tranny rebuild.
Any thoughts or advise on this would be great. Sorry for thelong post.

Yeah, I took it to my mechanic that last time it gave me trouble. He told me he thought it could be a faulty TCbut it would be best to let them try and fix it being they have done all this work to it.If they can't fix it this time, I'm going to have my mechanicfix it regardless.
Sounds like the TC, but it is probablynot the root of the problem given the new TC's are only lasting a few days. Either the TC is fine and there is something in the upstream electrical giving it interference. Or, there is something in the upstream electrical that is causing the TC to go bad. I'd make sure they take a multimeter to the electrical system and make sure everything upstream is ok. It'll be time consuming. I hope they're not making you pay for it.
