Default TRANS PROBLEM?

Ok it starteed this morning. I was riding along and pulling away from a stoplight the tranny didnt want to upshift. After shifting into neutral then back into drive (with overdrive ON) it shifted fine. It does it intermittently and sometimes shifts fine. It will randomly not want to upshift. Like it is getting stuck in whatever gear its in when it decides to not upshift. I turned OD off and it seems to do it less but still will do it. Not as much but still does it. The tranny has shifted fine as long as I have had it. Have replaced the TPS, speed sensor, IAC but need help. What are your thoughts. Truck has just over 105,000 on it. No codes.

Check out this service manual...it has a lot of info that might help. It takes a while to download but totally worth it.

Is that all the help I get from you guys? Oh and thanks for the remarks from a non ram driver(DAK). they were totally useless. I have looked at the service manual and plan to try a few thing like the pressure sensor and governor. Any other other thoughts?

unfortunately there are not a lot of transmission experts hanging around here. i'm also not one. the only advice i can offer is to service your transmission with the atf+4 fluid, now avail at some walmart and autozone. note the condition, color, and smell of the fluid, amount of sludge in bottom. this might/might not help, but at least its trying something and it won't cost over about $50. if you plan to keep the truck put in a trans drain plug it will make it a lot easier next time.

I would do a fluid/filter change, adjust bands, replace the governor pressure solenoid and switch, button it all up, adjust the TV cable, see If that fixxes the problem for you.

I had the same issue with mine before I ended up replacing it with the PATC, and thats what Dan the Fastman recommended and it worked. As for these trannies being junk, no more than any other transmission on the market, once you do a rebuild or get one built and they replace the parts that are less than perfect from DC, its a pretty solid tranny.

I'd say your Governor shift selenoid is about to take a dump, and theres a good possiblility your check valve up on the cooler line may be plugged. If it is, and you have the HD optional cooler in front of the radiator, you may want to flush it as well. Actually, I'd replace them with higher flowing aftermarket stuff.
Another area of concern is the plug on the drivers side of the trannywhere the electrical from the PCM plugs in. You may want to pull that and make sure its not full of mud, and corrosion. Road Saltand mud can get into it and cause malfunctions. Eventually you will get a trouble code.
The best thing to do is drop your fluid and your pan, checking both for discoloration, sludge and large amounts ofmetal chips. Theres a magnet in the factory pan to grab stuff, btw, sludge is not as big a deal as metal.

As an aside, my tranny guy pulled my valve body last week and changed the governor selenoid and both lockup selenoids. I'dhad a low voltage fault code at the gvernor shift seleniod for a while, and my tranny had started to surge in OD, which is a lockup issue.
You really wouldn't have to drop the valve body to do all this but he installed a shift kit as well. I'm not an authority either nowbut I got a real good education from him. He gave me hands on experience with theories I'd known for some time.

BTW Dak3.7, this is on a tranny that has 117k miles on it.It shifts REALLY good now, and doesnt't surge. Even 4th gear pops in with authority!

I have a 2000 1500 with 170,000. I run the daylights out of it pulling trailers of all sizes for hundreds of miles at a time. I have no tranny trouble. Don't pull in overdrive. I do take very good care of it. Service it regularly etc. Don't get brain washed by the non dodge guys, some of the problems are owner caused some are company designissues.Ask some gm guys about the old 700r4, they were much worse until they fixed them. Yes these have tranny issues, but I know of many other problems other brands have. It seems that dodge always get the bad reputation, nobody talks about the gm and ford for some reason. Anyway do the things these guys suggest, there is alot of knowledge here just take time to do some research and learn. Start with the cheap simple things and go from there. This tranny design is basically the old 727's with an overdrive added on. They are not just junk.

well you almost posted the same problem as me a year ago.I still have it also but, have not been in any hurry to fix it(2ed car).i did the fluid change(wish i installed a plug the first time) several times. I went as far as to disassemble the valve body myself.i adjusted everything from bands (a few times) to the tb,tv cable...etc.
my next focus is the selinoid packs. i do all the work myself (while learning) cause everyone wants 2,500 just to repair worn parts , not a complete rebuild..Ha Ha Ha .....I will fix it some day ,but not in a hurry... Let me know how you turn out. I still drive the hell out of mine every time i get the chance!!!!!!
