Transfercase Trouble
Just a couple of quick questions! What transfer-case does my 2000 2500 have in it, I think it is a NV241HD. Second, I can't shift on the fly, dead stop no problem. If I start out from a stop and engage the transfer-case before 10 to 15 MPH (off the accelerator) it will go in, above that no go, it just grinds. I changed the fluid recently. Any Ideas from you folks would be great.
Hi There.
If you have the if you have a Summary Report from the truck it will tell you what kind of transfer case is in it. If not any Dealer
can tell you what is in it with the Vin number. You can get the full list of what the truck came with from factory.
As for the transfer case when driving it. It might not be engaged 100% causing the the noise and slipping out. Check the shift
lever is moving properly and isn't out of ajustment. Try that.
Andy.

Thanks for the reply Andy!
I have confirmed that it is a NV241HD, I agree that the grinding might be from the linkage binding a little, it has been really cold lately, (I was up under it yesterday and all looked fine). I also think the whole shift throw is diminished from wear (hard to believe with only 50000 miles on the clock) on the fork pads, (I was told that there was plastic pads on the forks that might be worn and causing the lack of positive throw). I didn't see any place for adjustment, I'll look again, it was pretty cold yesterday and hard to see, I've secured a heated garage and will continue the troubleshooting. I know transfer cases are pretty simple and my first thought was the syncro, but a friend who works at a local Ford Garage said that was very unlikely. I will try to lube up the linkage, I'll let you know. Again thank for the response!

Not for 4HI, 4LO yes, and you should be stopped. 4HI should be able to be brought in on the fly, sometimes you have to back off the gas to unload the gear train, but it should slide in while driving along.

Don't you have to put it in neutral while moving, then shift it into 4wd for it to work properly?

I have noticed mine is a little tight going in lately also, I believe its from the -5* temps. Had to throw her in the other day because of the snowfall, it was tight, but slowed down a little and she went right in, as soon as it hits a decent temp I will lube it up and If I remember correctly it did the same thing last year during cold-cold weather.
