Default Help with hitch plug wire troubleshooting

Hello all..... Looks like a great site.....glad I found it!

I've got an '01 Ram 1500 that I bought used a few years ago and it appears to have the OEM hitch and round 7-pin plug. Anyway, last summer evening after pulling my boat out of the water I noticed that my trailer didn't have running lights. Everything else on the trailer worked and nothing didn't work on the truck so I thought it had to be the trailer wiring. However, everything checked out which lead lead me back to the truck. I located the proper pin at the hitch and it was dead. So, I backtracked from there to what appeared to be a relay near the hitch under the bed. I'm not sure what all the wires were going into the relay, but if memory serves me it had power coming from each tail light into it. I replaced the relay thinking I had it nailed, but that did not correct the problem afterall. A guy at work mentioned a trailer fuse under the hood, but that space is unoccupied. Just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions on where I might look next? What's the purpose of the relay........can one jumper across it and not fry something?

Someone scavenged the OEM hitch from my Ram before I bought it. Hooked up a 4 pin connector and put a new hitch on. Never saw a relay but I got a 99. And I dont have brakes on my trailers. Always disconnect before backin in the drink. Water + juice = instant ground.[:@]The service manual that you can download here may help ya find your prob.
