97 fuel gauge out?

my fuel gauge just quit working. light comes on with about 40 miles till empty. fuel gauge just stays on empty. any ideas on where to check first??

Change the sender, it's been a problem on these ride for awhile. A friends Dakota R/T, my '99 Durango, my Ram 1500....
