Default reusable oil pump parts

This will be my first time changing an oil pump. The pumps arent all that expensive, but with the screen, pickup tube, gaskets...it adds up. Is there anything I can use from my old pump instead of buying all new stuff, or does the oil pump come with all that crap?I just dont have alot of money. Also, is there a reason I should buy a high volume pump over the other. There is about a 30 dollar difference.

You dont need the high volume pump for any reason....besides u will use more hp; on my daytona a high volume pump uses 21 hp.......unreal....Unless your engine is a totally modified monster, u dont want or need it.Reuse the pickup tube and screen of course( clean it out really good, make sure its dry before u reinstall. When I changed the pump I also trimmed out around the screen. (made a larger surface area around the screen to pick up the oil) instead of forcing it through the small hole provided. It helped the oil pressure a bit,and just makes sense

Thanks, I was hoping I could reuse those parts...what about a gasket? As soon as I can remove my tranny brace, I will drop my pan, one bolt just doesnt want to give.

The sending unit.....I can not see this at all on my 99 318. Is this something Im going to have to change blind or should I be able to see this? I was told it was behind my block, Im sure you guys all know that there just isnt much room to get back there. I could barely reach my distributor cap.

I'd probably be kind of silly for someone inexperienced to try to rebuild an oil pump (although you can) considering it's the life of your engine and it only costs $50 in the first place........ The gasket is a plastic material, don't use rtv, silicone or anything else. Make sure both mating surfaces are clean and dry. It's probably cheap insurance to upgrade / replace the oil pump shaft, but that's up to you. It's also probably cheap insurance to replace the pickup due to the possibility of cracks, but that's up to you. Make sure you clean the old pickup till it sparkles. I use oven cleaner, it dissolves almost anything and is cheap. Make sure you follow the directions, with the exception of turning your oven on. You can leave that step out. HA! You can also use it on the inside of the pan too,if it's nasty like usual. Notice though, it can strip paint.

The only advice you need to make sure you follow is make sure your pickup is mounted properly...... and triple check the pickup height (from the bottom of the pan)........ and use a quality, Melling or other, pump (see line #1 above).

Good lord, quit being cheap. A high volume pump will ensure your engine is properly lubricated. The pickup and the tub can be reused. And gaskets are cheap. Hell, the new pump should come with a gasket. I installed a high volume pump when I rebuilt my engine and I think it was $40 tops. As stated previously, you don't want RTV or silicone used on internal parts where it can get into the oil passages. That will cause a blockage and then you're in big trouble.

Im not a cheap kind of guy, but with my moving an all this week, plus some doctor bills for my child, im limited on my money spending. If at all possible I just wanted to use the tube and screen, Im not trying to use anything else. I want to save as much money as i can, but also i dont want to reuse anything thats not 100% up to par. I will check the condition and make my decision from there. thanks for all the replies.
