Default What to expect from 1998 2500 w/ V10

I just bought a 1998 2500 quad cab with the V10. So far I love the truck. I would just like to hear what people that have similar truck have to say about them. What to expect gas mileage pulling a 26' camper trailer, common mechanical problems, anything to keep my eye out for. I know gas mileage will not be good but that is not why I bought this truck, I have just heard claims of 14-18 unloaded on the highway and 12-14 fully loaded. Any opinions appreciated.

There are a lot of good threads about v10s in this forum. The v10 will be good for about9-12 MPG. I get about10 unloaded and about 9 pulling my 31' 5th wheel. I'm running over size tires with 3.55 gears so myfuel economy is on the low side.Count on the rear axle speed sensor andthrottle position sensor going if they haven't been replaced allready. The K&N cold air intake is well worth the money because the stock set up in quite restrictive and good for an extra1/2 mpg. I also run syntheticmoter oil which gave me an extra1/2 mpg. This is one greattruck for towing!

1980Blackfiveoh, I have the exact same truck as you! No mods yet though . Do you know what the stock gears are for our trucks? Also, I have 32" tires on right now. When I put a lift on for bigger tires at which size would I need to upgrade my gears?

Jasdodge, good thing about the V10 is it gets the same mpg whether you're pulling a load or not. My mpg is about 9 city and 11 hwy. 1980 was right about the TPS and speed sensor also. I've heard great things about adding a fastman TB to go along with the CAI too... God I can't wait until I can start upgrading my truck.

3.55s stock gears. I find I tend to get about the same mpgempty or with 6k lbs on the hitch. I take it easier with a load behind me were empty I tend to be heavy footed.

Are the 3.55 gears good for pulling 10-12,000lbs or should I look more towards the 4.10?

4.10 is a much better gear for pulling. Unfortunatly it is on the expensive side to switch, even worse with a 4x4.
