I want to swap engines ...
I hope someone can answer this...
I have a ram 1999 1500 4x4 reg cab, short box with the larger V8.It's the 5.9 liter. Love the truck, but the engine is starting to fail. I have over 180K miles on her.
Anyway, what I'd like to do is swap a smaller v6 in its place. Do they have similar footprints or is there a ton of modification I'd need to do? And can anyone recommend an engine?
Let me know if I'm way off base. This is a project for me and my soon-to-be-driving-full-time son.
thanks,

if you want it on the road soon then go with another 5.9 spend the money for another used engine, if you would go with an v6 then i am sure you would have ot go with an v6 wire harness for the most part and an v6 comp and different fuel pump
why do a V6? you will lose a ton of power and gain only minimal mpg's. if anything, swap in a 5.2L V8...it will be a direct swap for the most part. plus you will get a very solid, strong motor. and the difference between the V6 and the 5.2L in terms of mpg is very small.
I had a Dakota (lighter truck)with the v6 saw top mileage with a 5 speed of maybe 17 highway most often 14-15 mixed driving, my 5.9L 2500 (heavy truck) gets around 14 highway and 12 mixed. I would never go with the smaller engines would not be worth it to me just my .02
You love the truck (5.9 and all) but want to put a V6 in it ? You will HATE it! [:'(] A full size Ram 4x4 with a V6 ... even Dodge didn't do that from the factory.
