Default Torque Converter

If my torque converter is bad, what are the symptoms? Would it cause my engine to stall when I shift into any gear, but on neutral it runs fine.

Default RE: Torque Converter

Check the condition of the tranny fluid. If any of the fins in the tc break off, they can and usually do disrupt the flow of fluid thru the transmission. Most people think the tc stays filled with the same fluid day in and day out. Even while the tc is in the fluid drive portion of operation, the fluid is still circulating thru the front cooler and then right back into the pan to work again. (sorry, I wander from the subject....lol)

The tc can shudder when it locks up.The housing warps, the lockup clutch slips.A high heat spot forms. Sometimes the lockup clutch slips because the pump cannot provide adequate pressure to the piston, due to that broken fin.

If you have dialed up your hp/tq. The Dodge factory tc's are designed to handle only the hp/tq from the factory engines. Any life you get after adding more horses is a bonus.

Take the truck for a drive. Get the tranny warmed up. Not major hill climbing but a highway run. Then check the fluid again. I bought a hobby shop infra red thermometer and use that to measure everything on the truck. Diff temps, oil temp, etc. Check the tranny fluid temp and if it's hot, like 200 or higher, then you probably have a tc problem.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Good luck with your ride.
