Default no cruise/95 Ram

the cruise control is not working even though the light on the steering-wheel comes on when pressed. Might there be a simple explanation or will I have to check the vac. hoses. Is there a list of how to check starting with the easiest thing first. I have only moderate knowledge but am armed with a haynes manual. ' monkey see, monkey do'.
Here in the UK there are not too many specialists around and I enjoy doing things myself whilst furthering my knowledge at the same time. This is my first dodge after 5 years of Chevy. wouldn't look back.
Thanks for any help.

the best thing would be a dealer scan tool to view everything. but these are simple systems, here are the posibilities.

1. bad or misadjusted brake sw
2. cruise servo
3. cruise set switch
4. vehicle speed sensor ( or abs )
5. engine control module

i cant remember if vehicle speed for the pcm comes from the sensor on the t-case or the abs like the newer trucks. check the vac line to the servo. it would be best if someone with access to a dealer scan tool could diag this. then only replace one part instead of going through this list. i have it in my 94 and never use it any way.

The cruise control actuator is a vacuum servo. It should be mounted underneath the battery tray, and have a 1/4 or 3/16" black, plastic hard line that runs from the servo up near the brake booster. Check the line to see if it's cracked or broken.

You may have a vacuum issue as well. Do your brakes work? Are you able to switch between defrost, vent, floor, bi-level, etc? If the vents and the brakes work ok, chances are you have a bad vacuum line, or a bad check valve.

If the cruise can be set, but it disengages quickly, check the brake light switch. It's up under the dash, and it depressed by the vertical brake pedal rod. The switch has an adjustable plunger on it that may be out of adjustment.

If you have access to a vacuum gauge, I would start there first and make sure the vehicle has proper vacuum.

Let us know how you make out.

Good luck with your ride.
